Skadarsko Jezero
Skadar Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans, located on the border between Montenegro and Albania. Its size varies depending on the season, reaching 530 square kilometers during rainy periods. About two-thirds of the lake belongs to Montenegro, while the Albanian part is hidden behind mountain ridges. Since 1983, the Montenegrin side of the lake has been designated as a national park, protected by the state.
Skadar Lake is a true natural phenomenon. It is fed by numerous underground springs known as "oka" (which translates to "eyes" in Montenegrin), through which pure water flows into the lake from karst caves. Thanks to this, the water remains clear and transparent, even during the hottest summer months.

People come here not only for the scenic views but also to experience the rich flora and fauna. The lake is home to more than 260 species of birds, including rare Dalmatian pelicans, cormorants, and herons. It hosts one of the largest colonies of curly pelicans in Europe. In spring and autumn, thousands of birds migrate through the lake, while in summer, its surface is covered with green carpets of water lilies.

The lake’s shores are adorned with ancient monasteries, abandoned fortresses, and charming fishing villages. One of the most famous places is Vranjina, while another significant historical site is the Beskha Monastery, founded in the 14th century by the wife of Montenegrin prince Đurađ II Balšić.
Skadar Lake is also a center of traditional fishing. More than 40 species of fish inhabit its waters, including the famous Skadar carp and eel, which locals smoke and serve with red Vranac wine. Small lakeside restaurants offer freshly caught fish prepared using ancient recipes.

Visitors can enjoy boat trips, kayaking, and cycling routes through picturesque hills and vineyards. Those seeking a peaceful retreat can simply relax, watching birds and admiring the reflection of the mountains in the crystal-clear water.

Skadar Lake remains one of the most untouched natural areas in Montenegro. It is a perfect destination for those looking to experience the country’s serene and scenic landscapes, far from the bustling beaches and tourist hotspots.
