Petrovac Islands
Off the coast of Petrovac, there are two picturesque islands—Sveta Nedelja and Katič—which have become an integral part of the town’s panorama and a popular tourist attraction. These islands, rising above the sea surface, create an impressive view and give the Petrovac coastline a special atmosphere of seclusion and harmony with nature.
Sveta Nedelja Island is known for its small ancient church. According to legend, sailors who survived a shipwreck and reached this island on a Sunday (called "nedelja" in Montenegrin) decided to express their gratitude for their miraculous rescue and built a church on the island. Since ancient times, the Church of Sveta Nedelja has been considered a place of power and a talisman for seafarers. It is believed that those who ring the church bell can make a wish, and it will certainly come true. Many travelers visit specifically for this ritual, believing in its magical effect. The bell is said to bring good luck on long voyages and protect against dangers at sea.
The island is accessible by boat, yacht, or kayak. Some tourists even swim to the island, though this requires good physical endurance. The water around the island is crystal clear, and the underwater world is rich in marine life, making it a popular spot among snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
Katič Island, located next to Sveta Nedelja, stands out with its wild and rugged appearance.
It is covered with rare pines and shrubs, and at its peak, there is a lighthouse that helps ships and yachts navigate the coastal waters safely.
Due to its secluded location, Katič has become a favorite destination for extreme nature lovers and adventurers seeking untouched corners of Montenegro.
Although Katič is uninhabited, it is surrounded by breathtaking seascapes and underwater rock formations, making it an interesting site for scuba diving. Divers and snorkelers often explore the island’s surroundings to observe the diverse marine life.
Sveta Nedelja and Katič have become a symbol of Petrovac. They not only enhance its coastline but also represent the historical and cultural heritage of the region. The islands are associated with many local legends that have been passed down through generations.
Sveta Nedelja and Katič embody tranquility, faith, and harmony with nature, and their mysterious beauty makes them one of the most memorable spots on the Montenegrin coast.
