Lovćen
Mount Lovćen is one of the most significant natural and historical symbols of Montenegro. It towers over the Bay of Kotor, forming an impressive natural barrier between the Adriatic coast and the inland regions of the country. Its two highest peaks—Štirovnik (1,749 m) and Jezerski vrh (1,657 m)—are visible from afar and are often shrouded in clouds, creating a majestic landscape.
Lovćen holds a central place in Montenegrin history. For centuries, Montenegrins defended their independence from its slopes, using the mountain passes as natural fortifications. It was here that the country’s national identity took shape, and the legends associated with Lovćen have been passed down from generation to generation.

Today, much of the mountain range is part of Lovćen National Park, established in 1952. Covering more than 60 square kilometers, the park is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including rare endemic species. Its forests are inhabited by wild boars, foxes, eagles, and hawks, and due to the altitude differences, a unique microclimate has formed in the area.

The most famous landmark of Lovćen is the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, located at the summit of Jezerski vrh. This outstanding ruler, poet, and philosopher wished to be buried here, from where a panoramic view of all of Montenegro unfolds.
The path to the mausoleum consists of 461 steps, leading to massive stone gates. Inside, visitors will find an imposing statue of Njegoš, created by the renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.Upon reaching the top, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view. According to legend, on a clear day, one can see half of Montenegro, as well as the Italian coast across the Adriatic Sea.

Lovćen is also famous for the serpentine roads that connect it to Kotor. The Petar Petrović-Njegoš Road, built in the 19th century, remains one of the most scenic routes in Europe. Featuring 25 sharp turns, it ascends from sea level to mountain peaks, offering spectacular views of the Bay of Kotor along the way.

Mount Lovćen is more than just a natural wonder; it is a place where the spirit of Montenegro can be truly felt. Here, history, culture, and stunning landscapes intertwine, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to understand the soul of this country.
